NRICH supporting Sutton Trust Summer School
A group of Year 12 students will spend five days in Cambridge this week (8th - 12th August) for the first Sutton Trust Summer School in Mathematics to be held at the University. The academic programme for the summer school has been devised by Dr Steve Hewson, Post-16 Co-ordinator for our NRICH project, and Dr Vicky Neale, Director of Studies in Mathematics for Murray Edwards College.
The Sutton Trust Summer Schools are free subject-specific residential courses for Year 12 (or equivalent) students from UK state-maintained schools. The five-day summer schools in July and August allow students to explore their interest in degree courses in one of 21 subjects and gain an insight into what it is like to live and study as a first-year undergraduate student at Cambridge. The programme includes lectures, seminars, discussion groups, practical work and social activities, as well as the opportunity to meet current staff and students and to live in a Cambridge College.
The Mathematics summer school has been designed to give participants an introduction to life as a university mathematics student. Students will actively work on a number of areas of mathematics in lectures, workshops and supervisions, led by staff and postgraduate students from the Cambridge Mathematics Faculty, experiencing approaches to mathematics that they might not have met previously, and gaining a better understanding of what studying Mathematics at Cambridge entails. In addition to Dr Steve Hewson and Dr Vicky Neale, other staff teaching on the course include Dr Stephen Siklos (Admissions Officer for the Faculty of Mathematics; Director of Studies and Senior Tutor at Jesus College) and Dr Julia Gog (head of the Disease Dynamics Research Group in the Department of Applied Mathematics, and Director of Studies in Mathematics at Queens' College).
