New NRICH Statistics resources for GCSE and A-level

We have launched a new set of free online mathematics education resources introducing key concepts in statistics for GCSE and A-level, published on our NRICH website. Statistics content in the mathematics curriculum has increased at both GCSE and A-level, and statistics is now both a core component of the Mathematics A-level and an essential component of A-levels in other subjects too.

Encouraging students to consider Further Mathematics A-level

NRICH has published a new module of free online resources, designed to encourage GCSE students to consider taking Further Mathematics at A-level by giving a taste of one of the mathematical topics they will explore. The resources introduce students to complex numbers, and were produced in collaboration with colleagues from the Universities of Cambridge, Oxford, Bath and Imperial College.

NRICH and Radio 4's 'Puzzle for Today'

Our NRICH project's collaboration with BBC Radio 4's flagship Today programme's popular Puzzle for Today' is continuing to engage and intrigue listeners. NRICH's rich, engaging resources are designed to develop mathematical thinking and problem-solving skills. Collaborating with Today offers a great opportunity to reach a new audience.

Hands-On Maths at the Cambridge Science Festival!

Over 500 enthusiastic visitors joined us for our Cambridge Science Festival Hands-On Maths Fair on Saturday 24 March 2018. Aimed at a family audience, the Hands-On Maths Fair featured activities for all ages from 5 upwards. The activities at the Hands-On Maths Fair are designed to encourage children (and adults) to explore, experiment, discover, question and enjoy! Many are based on activities from our NRICH Hands-On Maths Roadshow, or adapted from other ideas and resources from the NRICH website and accompanying Wild Maths website.

Countdown to Christmas with our mathematical Advent calendars!

Share in the festive spirit with our annual NRICH and Plus mathematical Advent calendars! NRICH has published two online Advent calendars, one for primary students (ages 5 to 11) and one for secondary. Both are filled with 24 of our favourite short problems, one for every day in the run up to Christmas.

NRICH Director Ems Lord elected President of the Mathematical Association

Ems Lord, NRICH Director, has been elected President of the Mathematical Association for 2019/2020. The Mathematical Association is the oldest established teachers' subject association in the UK. Ems Lord joined the MMP as NRICH Director in 2015, following her previous role leading one of the country's largest Mathematics Specialist Teacher Programmes. Ems has taught mathematics across all key stages, from Early Years to A Level Further Mathematics.

BBC Pandemic

A groundbreaking collaboration between research mathematicians and the BBC invites everyone in the UK to contribute to research to combat future pandemics. A team of mathematical researchers (and frequent MMP collaborators!) are working with the BBC on an innovative project, BBC Pandemic, combining outreach, citizen science and new mathematical research. The Spanish Influenza outbreak in 1918 killed up to 100 million people worldwide. Nearly a century later, a catastrophic flu pandemic still tops the UK Government’s Risk Register of threats to this country.

Helping Cambridge University applicants to prepare for STEP

188 state school students holding conditional offers to study Mathematics at Cambridge joined us in March 2017 for an intensive day of STEP preparation support. STEP is an additional mathematics examination which forms part of conditional offers to applicants for mathematics, and some related degress, at Cambridge and a number of other universities. The STEP exam covers content based on the A-level Maths and Further Maths syllabus, but questions are different in style, and designed to be more like those you meet at university.

Celebrating maths at the Cambridge Science Festival!

Hundreds of visitors of all ages joined volunteer staff and students from the Faculty of Mathematics at the Cambridge Science Festival Maths Public Open Day on Saturday 25 March 2017. Over 70 staff and student volunteers shared the excitement of maths through hands-on activities, games and demonstrations, aimed at all ages. The event, which is co-ordinated on behalf of the Faculty by the MMP, attracted around 400 visitors, mostly families with children, with most staying for several hours to explore everything on offer.
